What we got here is a failure to communicate!

No reason in particular… just feel like I could whack something really hard. Something. Not someone.

Really good thing I’m not drinking.  I wasn’t a happy drunk.

Actually, one problem I’ve been having is this:  lately, more often than not, I am not getting return calls or messages from people.  Some are friends, some just acquaintances.   I’m not talking about the lack of responding in a timely manner- I’m talking not responding at all!  What the??   The rudeness and lack of consideration astounds me.

There must be 50 ways to leave a message.

And maybe the above hints of where the problem lies:  two problems really.  My expectations, for one and two, there are just too many options when it comes to communication.

The good ole days-  a telephone.  Just call.  No answer? not home.  Busy signal? on the phone- but at least you know they’re home.  Then comes the arrival of answering machines. Ahhh…  now the screening of calls begins.  So as you’re leaving a message, paranoid self is wondering if there is someone hovering at the other end to see who it is before they commit to picking it up.  Caller ID made it simpler- you didn’t need to wait for the message to know who you wanted to avoid.  Email arrived soon after that.  Or before that?   Then cell phones- great- not home?  call the cell.  Don’t forget to check the cell phone voicemail.  Or iMessage if you’re rich enough for an iPhone.  Oh yeah, I almost forgot the text messages.  OK folks, now we’ve also got Facebook and the countless other social media sites where messages can be left.

Anyone else see how insane this is?

Rant over.

Thanks for listening.

Thanks be to God I’m still sober.

  1. This irritates me too. Some people are plain rude. I have whittled down my ‘friendships’ since becoming sober for this very reason. I don’t want to deal with people who are inconsistent, inconsiderate or simply playing games.

    1. I’m really not sure what it’s all about. I do think it’s easy to miss a call or msg because of all the different ways we communicate. Also I think many people are just overwhelmed although I’ve noticed this going on more and more in the past year and a half or so. Sorry for being such a downer.😩

      1. Don’t be sorry. People are busy it’s true and yep, overwhelmed. I once had a friend tell me that I didn’t appreciate how busy her job was and important. That was her excuse for ignoring me. Now I don’t engage with her much at all. She wants me to but only on her terms. Some people don’t like give and take. I think you sense if it’s a genuine oversight or someone is struggling.

Is it one person in particular or a few?

  2. I hate this, too. Although I do think, in some cases recently, people might be extra depressed or stressed because of the pandemic and thus behaving extra poorly. It likely has nothing to do with you and how they feel about you. ❤️

  3. It is hard not to take it personally but when it starts happening over and over again, well… I’m the only common denominator!😂 Seriously though, technology could make our lives simpler and more efficient but in most cases, it just complicates things. Again, maybe it’s the user= me! Or the Universe sending me a message I need to be quiet and listen.🤔

  4. I remember a line from “hes just not that into you” where they say something along the lines of, “I try his cell no answer, I send an emails, msn etc and I go round and round being rejected by all these different types of technology, its exhausting”.
I try and take comfort in it says more about them than it does you when it happens. But it’s so hard not to take it personally. I think people are right, the pandemic hasnt helped and people go into themselves more.

    Deep breaths.

  5. awwwww ❤ yes, it can be super annoying not to receive a response. In those cases I try my nest to let go of my own expectations and just sadly acknowledge that people are inconsiderate, or I am expecting too much of them ") Hang in there! xxx Anne
